The Messenger

The Messenger follows a community of seekers whose leader has gone missing. They have always lived in harmony with the land, their ancestry, and beliefs. What will they do in his absence? In this fusion of classical, jazz and new music, the community sets out to answer this very question.

This performance is a Work in Progress presentation of a work that is being developed as a part of National Sawdust’s Artists-in-Residence program. We invite you to come support these world class artists and experience new art in its earliest stage. The evening will consist of a performance, followed by a Q&A with the lead artists, Helga Davis and Kaneza Schaal.

Spirit in the Vine: A Sankopera takes place in the mythic realm of Zaradús, drawing direct inspiration from the African-American folktale High John and Devil's Daughter while expanding its lore. The story begins when a wise woman creates a baby of extraordinary magical ability for the childless rulers. Their joy, however, is darkened when the High Queen is suddenly murdered.

In the kingdom of Zaradús, there is but one sacred law: do not die. So begins the story of Singing-Daughter of the House of Concaïma, a twice-blessed being of miraculous power. The apple of her King-father's eye, Singing-Daughter, is kept locked in a tower and forced to renew the kingdom's immortality with her voice. Yet Singing-Daughter is plagued by strange visions that no one can interpret, until the arrival of a powerful Immortal called Prince Cotton alters the course of her fate and the wrath of a Goddess throws the court into chaos. As the High King's destiny hangs in the balance, Singing-Daughter embarks on a journey to free him and the rest of her kingdom from the curse of immortality.

No Land: Double Twilight

No Land: Double Twilight

Roulette commissions the world premiere of “Double Twilight,” a sonic-poem work by poet and visual artist No Land. Joined by collaborators Oliver Ray, Daniel Carter, Shahzad Ismaily, Miriam Parker, & others, No Land presents a spirit-temple troupe of seekers in various entwining ensembles. Through poetry, sonic travel, & cinematic paintings, this work invokes realms of etheric mystery, compassion-studies, fever-dreams, and outlaw poet histories, and upholds the mercurial imagination as a form of activism. No Land weaves immaterial spirit as the connective, translucent thread between mediums and the hearts of her collaborators. Roulette Intermedium is the reliquary for this exploration, with No Land’s visual and painted works on view, as well as her performance work.

An Unsung Symphony: Simon & Brahms

The Unsung Collective

“In another collaboration with The New York Philharmonic Orchestra we welcome J’nai Bridges in  an exciting New York premiere of Carlos Simon’s Songs of Separation. Along with text of Persian poet, Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī, Simon’s music encompasses beauty, depth, polarity and an overall human experience illustrated quite vividly.
The Unsung embraces Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, a true masterpiece. Welcoming soprano Brittany Renee of the Metropolitan Opera and baritone Phillip Bullock, the performance of this piece channels the humanness of intimacy, longing, motivation, and the power of influence.
Both works illustrate a powerful human experience and highlight the dynamic influence of women in one’s life.”
